The reason I ask is that I have a suspect head gasket failure on my 02 focus 1.6 auto, but I have no tell tale signs (oil in coolant or coolant loss) just overheating after a short journey and major overheating over 60 mph.
To answer your question though, yesthe head temperature sensor does turn the radiator fans on, albeit indirectly through the ECU. Once the computer sees the head reach whatever temperature correlates with the coolant being 190C it turns on the radiator fans as this is the temperature at which the stock thermostat opens.

The system is meant to be under pressure about 13lb when hot that is why you should never remove the filler cap when the engine is still hot. If the expansion tank is too full it will blow off the excess coolant.
